Clip Sectional by Thayer Coggin
D SCALE has been working with Thayer Coggin for a few years now. We try and promote their collection as much as possible. Their showroom and work shop are in North Carolina and they have been a family business for over 65 years. Their upholstery is some of the most comfortable I have experienced in this industry. They actually layer three foam densities for cushions - so you ease into the sofa. Thayer Coggin also introduced burl table tops and casegoods whose sihouettes are very mid-century modern but become versatile through the various finishes.
I often tease my associate about how the Thayer Coggin photography is a bit drab and dated so I wanted to post a few photos I came across on the "Because I'm Addicated" blog. Check out the rest of the collection at www.thayercoggin.com

I cannot tell you how many times I have had this conversation with patrons in passing:
"How long have you been here?"
"Just about 4 years"
"Oh I walk by here almost everyday!" or "I never knew you were here!"
Do you recognize this facade? This is a lovely image of our storefront taken by Michael J Lee Photography. D SCALE is located in the South End on the corner of Harrison Ave. and Randolph St. in the SOWA disctrict. SOWA is a burgeoning neighborhood having transformed over the past four years since we first opened in 2007. At that point we were the only commercial storefront in this area. Today, however, we are in good company as GTI Properties has built out and leased several spaces to artist, galleries, furniture showrooms (Mohr & McPherson, CASA Design, Lekker Home and our newest neighbors ADDO Novo and Reside) small and large creative , cutting-edge businesses. Not to mention the area is flanked and peppered with some of Boston's best restaurants like Gaslight, Myers & Chang, Union and a personal favorite of mine, Franklin Cafe. We are thrilled with the transformation and are finding that SOWA is becoming a destination for home owners and designers looking for furnishings.
Well, now you know and I hope you visit. I have even included an image of our storefront so you don't miss us!! Come by on your way to dinner some night (we close at 6PM) or drop in after brunch over the weekend!

Dennis Duffy’s modern furniture store now carries unique, contemporary lighting and case goods from East Coast Modern
D SCALE Modern Furnishings was established in 2007 by award winning interior designer Dennis Duffy under the premise that furniture and accessories should be thoughtfully designed, timeless and offer lasting value. Furnishing a home is an investment and at D SCALE each piece is well crafted, durable and designed with a sense of scale and balance. The D SCALE Collection designed by Dennis Duffy and made locally in New England is complemented by other lines of modern furniture and accessories each with its own story of artistry and importance. Since 2007 D SCALE has refined and established an illustrious and exclusive showcase of custom capable furniture from around the world.
Joining D SCALE’s hallmark lines are the furnishings, lighting and fine art by John May and Jeremy Greer, the two talented craftsmen behind East Coast Modern based out of Newburyport, MA. D SCALE’s South End furniture showroom is now home to EC Modern’s debut lighting collection featuring their Architectural series of table, floor and accent lamps. The overall concept and design of the lamps are uniquely architectural yet maintain a soft modern feel through the use of warm, organic wood finishes. This concept is apparent in their hand carved seating, case pieces, tables and mirrors – all of which are custom capable. EC Modern uses the highest quality materials and hardware most of which they design and manufacture in house. “The construction is impeccable and the finish combinations they use are highly sophisticated. They are extremely detail oriented and conscious of delivering a high quality, functional piece of art. That’s really what each piece is – the lamps, case goods and wood turned accessories are all functional pieces of artwork or sculptural home décor,” notes Rosie Cipriani, D SCALE’s studio director.
As a recognized interior designer and storeowner, Dennis Duffy continually seeks out inspirational pieces to showcase at the store. “D SCALE was founded on the principles of scale, balance and the use of nature inspired materials,” Duffy explains. “East Coast Modern exemplifies these values.” Their furnishings also offer a sense of history as shown in the Jake Series by John May of East Coast Modern. This table series is a throwback to a design originally produced by his father in the 1960’s. John kept the scale small at 32” long by 18” wide and opted for walnut over his father’s signature rosewood finish resulting in a modern rendition of a family classic. John is currently working on a collection of contemporary wood turned bowls. Completely transforming a seemingly traditional accessory into a modern work of art by adding a high gloss white lacquer exterior – the juxtaposition of wood grain and white lacquer on a perfectly sculpted bowl exhibits how a simple design tweak makes the application of one piece so much more versatile. See for yourself the fresh like of work by these multitalented, incredibly skilled artists at D SCALE’s showroom or peruse D SCALE’s newly updated website www.dscalemodern.com.

D SCALE now represents the stunning, contemporary collection of lighting, furniture and accessories by Jeremy Greer and John May of East Coast Modern. I am especially excited about their Architectural Lighting collection that is designed and produced by the artists in their Newburyport shop. The lamps are a fresh take on contemporary and modern lighting made mostly from solid wood and exotic veneers rather than plastic, glass or metal. Many of EC Modern’s finishes incorporate a polished high gloss complimented by hand-rubbed finishing or low sheen water based paint. The overall concept and design of the lamp bases are uniquely architectural yet maintain a soft modern feel with the warm veneer and organic grain. The shades are all custom designed with the lamp base and finishes in mind. EC Modern uses the highest quality materials and hardware most of which they design and manufacture in house.
The wood turned lamps are designed, shaped and formed by a well-known wood turner, John May. John learned the craft of wood turning from his father and now incorporates this technique into this floor lamp base that is simply stunning. I consider these lamps functional art and sculptural lighting!!
Take a minute to browse their collection of lighting, furniture and accessories on the EC Modern Website
